What’s that old saying, ‘the sum is greater than the parts’, well for me that statement typifies our performances at the moment. That may sound like a back handed pop at the ability of our players, but to the contrary, it is intended as a compliment, they are currently a pleasure to work with.
Game plans are laid out and followed to the letter, no concerns about the role they are asked to fulfil in that plan, no dissension when that game plan is adapted as games unravel, and the end product has been victories against sides that arguably have as much, and in some cases more, foot balling talent than us.
For me, this goes to prove that football is much more to do with player’s intelligence than what ability they have in their feet.
Last Saturday was a prime example. Without the flair of Allard, the pace of Browne and the guile of Connolly, it was imperative we played as a unit, keeping things simple, working the percentages, and most importantly, sticking to the game plan.
Mark Way came in for his first start since 22nd September, and Tom Halliwell resumed his place on the right.
The first half proved to be one way traffic, with the elements of wind and sun assisting our own contribution. Frankie helped himself to 3 goals, taking his tally to 13 for the season, the first two being headers, as he out climbed visiting defenders, and the third was a penalty.
In the second half, Sprowston came out much more purposeful, forcing us to put in some stubborn defence, and they were some what unfortunate not to score. The woodwork was hit on at least two occasions, and Cuddy continued his good form, pulling off one or two excellent saves to maintain a clean sheet.
Richard Leathers, Steve Barnes and Tom Amis all entered the fray, playing their part in a good all round performance.
In the dying minutes of the game Frankie added his fouth to secure the “man of the match” award, with Adam Solley and BP tying for second, with battling midfield performances.
With Acle’s loss to near neighbours Blofield, this result sees us climb to third in the League. Wroxham continue to set a hot pace, winning a tough encounter 2 – 1 against Sheringham. My tips for the top, Cromer, beat North Walsham 3-1.
