Saturday, 30th April 2016, 2:30PM, at Bungay Road, Hempnall

Home Match, Anglian Combination Division 5 South - 2015 - 2016

Hempnall Reserves v Harleston Reserves,

Loss, 1 - 6

The last game of the season for Hempnall Reserves saw them need a point to ensure they stayed off the bottom of the league, but they were playing a very strong looking Harleston Reserves side with former Hempnall favourites Pretty and Chrystall, in their line up.

Hempnall had a couple of first team regulars reinforcing their side, and they started off well, with their first half performance being the best seen at Hempnall this season from the Reserves.

Hempnall played so well that they deservedly took the lead through a great run and finish from Lambe, and kept pressing and worrying the Harleston defence, though Harleston managed to pull one back before half time, their favoured ploy being the long ball over the defence, and it worked well.

After getting something of the proverbial rocket from their manager during the half time break, Harleston’s second half performance was a different story.

They came out of the blocks to score two quick goals, and from there, Pretty and Co in Harleston’s defence were hardly troubled, and they scored a further four to run out worthy winners.

Hempnall can be generally pleased with their performance, Shaun Kelly received the ‘man of the match’ award for his classy performance, though other most notable contributors were ‘Secretary’s most improved player of the year’, Jordan Batterham, and lone foraging striker, Tom Leeder, both of whom worked remarkably hard. As has become customary, keeper Alex Harvey had his usual good game between the sticks. Adam Bellingham prompted from midfield, his distribution was at times nothing short of elegant, and he set up several half chances that could not be taken.

The class and experience of Harleston won out in the end, they deserved promotion but have completed their season in third place – best of luck to them for next season

The mood in the dressing room after was bouyant, with a number of first teamers present to support the Reserves, and all seem to be looking forward to next season.

The Reserves have benefitted this season from the remarkable efforts of Nick Talbot and Matty Oakley, who have secured the services of a number of very promising players who we hope will take Hempnall forward in the next few seasons.

Well done to all the players, enjoy your club night out tonight, we are looking forward to the presentation afternoon on May 29th, to include a five a side tournament, barbeque and bar.
