On a very bumpy, wet Hempnall pitch which was barely playable in all honesty, Hempnall Sunday took on AG Hingham in a top of the table clash.
Hempnall were without a few players, and a couple played with injuries as Hempnall called off too late to take advantage of the one game a season without penalty rule.
The pitch was unquestionably a leveller, Hempnall could not play their normal fast flowing football, though for most of the match, were the team who looked the most likely to score, but Watton had their chances too.
From the off, half chances were evident but none could be finished, the pitch was clearly causing a few issues.
Neither side really looked like scoring, and we always felt that the Hempnall defence were able to withstand any attacks, but going forward, the conditions didn’t help.
It wasn’t until the second half that we really got frustrated at the fact that so many chances were created but none put away, and then a penalty, somewhat harsh, was awarded to Hingham and well saved by Bailey.
Following all of the half and missed Hempnall chances, it was no surprise when Hingham took an undeserved and very lucky lead though a misplaced cross that ended up in the back of the Hempnall net.
Hempnall responded in like fashion, and a cross come shot ended up in the Hingham net, to level the match.
Hempnall kept pushing, and we were sure the winner would come, though still mindful of the breakaway goal Hingham could inflict.
An excellent save from the Hingham keeper from a fine free kick from Blake was the last of the major escapes for Watton.
All in all, not a great performance from Hempnall, though the rain and muddy pitch was a significant factor in the game staying level.
So 1-1 at the end, Hingham can feel very pleased with this result.
There were a number of good performances today, but my two stand our performers were Bailey in goal and Blake in defence (awesome was how a couple of supporters described it).
So today, joint MOM, Bailey and Blake.
