Hempnall First Team v CEYMS Reserves

Home Match, Fosters Solicitors Anglian Combination Division 3 South - 2025 - 2026

Loss, 1 - 2

After winning their first five matches to lay second in the Division, Hempnall somehow lost to Earsham last week through missed chances, and this week, despite being by far the better team overall, Hempnall threw this week’s match away too.

Before reporting, a word for our centre back and assistant to the Manager, Matt Jillings, who broke his ankle a couple of weeks ago at Caister. All at the Club wish him well, and a speedy recovery.

Hempnall welcomed CEYMS Reserves to Bungay Road, hoping to put last week’s defeat to bed and resurrect their top of the table push.

Etherington, their tricky attacker was not available, but still the squad looked strong, and despite the driving rain, started well, pressurising the CEYMS defence at every opportunity. It looked to be a matter of time before Hempnall would despatch one of their chances, but it was a defensive mistake, a backward header didn’t reach the keeper and the CEYMS forward gleefully put the easy chance away for an undeserved 0-1.

Still Hempnall pressed, and a dubious offside saw a Womack goal disallowed.

Hempnall were undaunted however, maintaining the pressure, with Herbert looking particularly threatening, but the movement throughout the team was excellent, and it was only a matter of time before Hempnall equalised, an excellent Shaun Kelly header from a good corner.

Hempnall pressed and pressed, the unlucky Womack smashed a shot against the bar, and at other times, the CEYMS keeper remained secure, and Hempnall couldn’t find a way through despite having most of the attacking play.

A penalty was awarded to Hempnall for a foul on Womack, and the normally dependable Gent somehow skied his effort, so it remained 1-1. Had that gone in, Hempnall would have, I am sure, won the match.

As it was, the attacking traffic was occasionally interrupted by a CEYMS break, and towards the end of the match, one such break was covered by the Hempnall keeper, but, normally secure, the ball was not gathered, and the free ball was despatched for an improbable CEYMS goal, and victory.

We are still trying to work out how that happened – a combination of poor finishing, CEYMS goalkeeper quality, final pass poor decision making, all can be put right – so onwards and upwards.

Man of the match this week is difficult to choose, but for his general excellence, I think Shaun Kelly shades it above Herbert and Billy Kelly.
